I learned to work well under pressure, and I have a great respect for the profession. It was a fitting assignment for an officer who had to learn a lot of new skills, and a new job in order to be a professional. Police officers who work special details are expected to make decisions in a split second, and those decisions will have an impact on their life.

The thing about special details is that they are designed to develop police officers during high risk hours. Five years ago, on my second day as a police officer, I was assigned to work a special detail.

Later this month, I will mark five years of being a Detroit Police officer. However, God has been faithful, and I am still here. At times, I have been very concerned with whether or not I would be able to complete my life. My eyes, legs and arms led me to a professional profession. I also have benefited from health issues that limited what I could do physically. I have been blessed with a wonderful family, and friendship and professional success along the way. I feel fortunate to have been able to see this milestone in my life. In August 2014, I will turn 50 years old.
